Open-source alternatives to Sellsy
Sellsy sells modules. Closara installs one complete CRM at your place, with no boxes to tick.
How Sellsy bills
Per user, with modules (CRM, invoicing, cash, marketing) each adding to the bill. French vendor, French hosting.
What keeps you on Sellsy
Lock-in is almost never a contract clause. It is accumulated work you cannot take with you.
- Modules sell separately and rejoin poorly elsewhere.
- Commercial and accounting documents create a long dependency.
- Vendor-hosted.
Sellsy and Closara, line by line
| Sellsy | Closara | |
|---|---|---|
| Where your data lives | On the vendor's servers | On your server, always |
| What grows the bill | Seats, contacts, credits | Nothing: no seat, no contact, no credit |
| Where the AI runs | In their cloud, on your data | Locally, on your machine |
| White-label | Rarely, and on top tiers | Included: name, colour, logo |
| Access to code and database | None | Full — source delivered, proprietary licence (not OSI) |
| What you keep if you leave | CSV files | Everything: the code, the database, the server |
What Closara does instead
On your server, not in their cloud
Closara installs on your machine or VPS. Records, conversations and recordings never leave your building — that is not a contractual promise, it is an IP address.
No per-seat subscription
Add a rep, an intern, a partner: the bill does not move. The cost of a CRM should not punish a hire.
The AI runs locally
Call prep, scoring, summaries and coaching execute on your server. No prompt, no customer record, no recording is sent to a third party.
White-label included
Name, colour and logo under your brand, with isolated client workspaces. An agency can resell the tool under its own name.
The code and the database are yours
The source is delivered to you: audit everything, back up everything, take everything. This is not an OSI open-source licence — you may not redistribute it — but the exit stays open, which is precisely why people stay.
Migrating from Sellsy to Closara
Per-module exports are clean; the difficulty is rebuilding links between quotes, invoices and deals.
- Read before writing — a full Sellsy export is loaded read-only into Closara. Nothing is deleted on their side, nothing is irreversible.
- One week in parallel — the team works in both tools for seven days. Deliberately short: beyond that, nobody keeps it up and the data diverges.
- Move the users — accounts move to Closara, running sequences are replayed at the same cadence, meetings follow.
- Cancel, not before — the Sellsy subscription stops once a full week has run without falling back. Keep a dated export: that is your safety net.
When you should stay on Sellsy
If you want a complete French suite from quote to collections, Sellsy is broader than Closara on paperwork.
We would rather lose a sale than install a tool nobody will use. A migration costs team time, and that time never comes back.
The context, and how this page was built
On 31 August 2026 we measured what Google actually sends Closara: 47 % of the visible demand came down to a single question — "an open-source alternative to a mainstream CRM" — and one page of ours was already catching 13 queries from that group, at positions 34 to 56. So we wrote one page per competitor — 32 competitors, 66 pages, 2 languages — rather than one page per phrasing. Every sheet links to the vendor's own pricing page: 91 % of them (29 out of 32) answered normally at the last check, the other three refuse robots but stay open to humans. We keep these checks for 12 months so we can watch billing models move.
The real subject is not price, it is where your data lives. The General Data Protection Regulation makes you the controller even when the tool belongs to someone else; the CNIL, France's data protection authority, is explicit that transfers outside the European Union must be framed; and retention periods for commercial records are set out on service-public.fr. A self-hosted CRM exempts you from none of this — it makes it verifiable, because the server is yours.
Our numbers, for scale: Closara runs on 1 server from 2 vCPU and 4 GB of memory, the local AI answers call prep in under 3 seconds, switching from a cloud CRM takes 7 days of parallel entry, and the point where self-hosting costs less than a subscription sits between 5 and 10 seats depending on the tool you leave. In 2025 this architecture carried one product; in 2026 it carries eleven.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an open-source alternative to Sellsy?
Yes — several, and their differences deserve honesty. EspoCRM, SuiteCRM, Odoo and Twenty are free and self-hostable, but none ships local AI or sequences ready to sell with. Closara is a complete CRM you install on your own server, with local AI and white-label included.
Is Sellsy open source?
No. Sellsy is proprietary software hosted by its vendor: you can export your data, but you cannot audit the code, install it in-house, or change it without going through them.
Can you self-host Sellsy?
No. No edition of Sellsy installs on your infrastructure. If self-hosting is your criterion, the answer is not to negotiate with them but to change tool category.
How do you migrate from Sellsy to Closara?
Per-module exports are clean; the difficulty is rebuilding links between quotes, invoices and deals. The switch happens in four steps: pull the data read-only, run one week of outbound in parallel, move the users, then cancel. Nobody works in two tools for more than seven days.
Is Closara cheaper than Sellsy?
The comparison does not happen in the same place. Sellsy charges a recurring subscription that follows your growth; Closara installs on a server you already pay for, and adds no seat, no contact and no credit. At three people the difference is modest; at fifteen it becomes the most visible line in the budget.
What data can you export from Sellsy?
Per-module exports are clean; the difficulty is rebuilding links between quotes, invoices and deals.
When should you stay on Sellsy?
If you want a complete French suite from quote to collections, Sellsy is broader than Closara on paperwork. We would rather say it plainly: a failed migration costs more than a subscription.
